Measuring Tread Depth: When Are Tyres Really Worn?

Tyre tread depth is a crucial safety factor. The legal minimum tread depth in Germany is 1.6 mm for passenger cars. However, many safety experts recommend changing summer tyres at 3 mm and winter tyres at 4 mm, as wet and snow grip decreases significantly with less tread.

Tread depth can be easily measured with a coin: insert a 1-euro coin into the tread groove. If the gold rim of the coin remains visible, the tread depth is too low. More professional is measurement with a tread depth gauge, which every workshop uses.

New tyres have a tread depth of around 8 mm. Many manufacturers build in wear indicators, small ridges in the tread groove that become visible at 1.6 mm remaining tread. Never drive on worn tyres – book your tyre check at ENBA now.
